Exploring the Neurodiversity of FASD

All people are different. We communicate differently, we experience emotions differently, our bodies are shaped differently, we have different hair colors, drive different cars, and live in different houses. Our brains even work differently… and as you’ll learn in this session, the 1 in 7 children with prenatal exposure to alcohol have brains that have developed differently than those without prenatal alcohol exposure.

In this session you will learn:

• What Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is, the prevalence, and how it can be prevented
• How prenatal alcohol exposure affects a developing brain
• The link between brain function and behaviors- challenges and strengths
• Strategies for changing behaviors
• What you can do to prevent FASD and support individuals that may have it

About the speaker:

Jackie Franks, MPH, CHES, CPS:

Jackie Franks is the Executive Director of Indiana Alliance on Prenatal Substance Exposure. Jackie is an Illinois native and received her bachelor’s degree in health science and master’s degree in Public Health from Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. Jackie has worked extensively in health education, promotion, and primary disease prevention for over a decade. Jackie is a Certified Prevention Specialist and a Certified Health Education Specialist. IAPSE is a recognized leader in Indiana for education and prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

CEU Information:

This course provides 1.5 CEU’s. CEU’s are Category 1 CEU provided by Indiana State statute 839IAC 1-6-2(F)(86). MHAI Stanley W. DeKemper Training Institute provides CEU’s for the following:
