Call The Midwife – It’s a great mini-series from the BBC and NPR, and it’s also the callout for our next lunch & learn!

Valerie Koster, a registered nurse-midwife, shares her experience with FASD. This training is open to all, and especially those nurses, NPs, midwives, doulas, birthing centers & prenatal clinics.

Our Presenter

Valerie Koster graduated from the University of Illinois in nursing and from the University of Utah with a master’s degree in nursing and a specialty in Nurse-Midwifery. As a certified nurse-midwife, she worked at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, although most of her midwifery work was in a private practice attending home births. She has been teaching nursing for the past 20 years.

She has two daughters, one of whom has been diagnosed with a number of conditions, including alcohol-related birth defects, a condition of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. In learning how to best understand her daughter’s FASD, she became a SAMHSA/CDC FASD trainer and is part of a group called NPs, Midwives, and Nurses: Partnering to Prevent FASDs. She is also part of a local support group for families raising children with FASDs.
