TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF – This is critical. The demands of caring for an individual with FASD are relentless and require unfathomable stamina. You are NOT being selfish craving out intentional time for yourself. When we are not in the best physical, psychological, emotional shape we scan be in, our ability to care for others productively is impaired.

  • Resolve any trauma or emotional issues from your past
  • Address any new traumas or emotional issues as quickly as possible
  • Know your triggers, filters or things that can derail you from accurately see the situation for what it is
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Exercise regularly
  • Participate in activities you enjoy alone or with a special friend
  • Take time to be alone
  • Grant yourself permission to grieve. More often than not, caregivers do not recognize that “we just went over that yesterday” represents the gap between where you really are and the expectation of where you want to be. This gap is accompanied by emotions. Caregivers are generally focused on managing the situation and the gap is buried, with layers of gaps. These gaps lead to unproductive thoughts, filters and erode our relationships
  • Forgive yourself for not being able to create a good fit between the capabilities of an individual with FASD and the environmental expectations. You can only adapt what you have direct authority and control over.
